Science: Germination

Content:

Most plants grow from a seed. This process is called GERMINATION.
Plants need the right conditions to grow well. All seeds need air, moisture (water) and the right temperature to germinate. Some seeds need sunlight whilst others need darkness to grow.

Germination Process:

Step 1: A seed is planted. When the conditions are right the seed starts to take in water.

Step 2: The seed begins to swell and the outer covering called the seed coat splits apart.

Step 3: Air gets into the seed and helps the baby plant inside the seed to grow. The baby plant is called the embryo. The embryo has 2 parts: the root and the shoot.

Step 4: The root grows downward into the soil and the shoot grows upwards and above the ground, towards the light.

Step 5: The shoot develops into a new plant as it continues to grow and sprout new leaves.
